I Read Banned Books

Here's a mini-challenge that I'll definitely be participating in: Banned Books Week. Caliista is inviting everyone to read at least one banned book between September 29th and October 6th. She also provided a link to the ALA Banned Books project, and there I discovered a new thing to covet:

Banned Book Bracelets: kind of pricey at $18 (if your wrist is small like mine, you can get the $12 kid's one, but it has kids' books), I absolutely love the format of this one, but for some reason it's coming up as 'unavailable at this time.' Get your act together, ALA! They also have a super-cool tote bag. Tempting. Anyway, here's my possibilities pool (with any luck, I'll get to them all):

The Color Purple by Alice Walker
I wanted to read this for the Southern Reading challenge, but it managed to slip under the radar.

The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier
I think I'm the only person who never read this. Interestingly enough, my library shelves this in adult fiction.

The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros
This one has been tempting me for awhile, so now might be a good time to fit it in!

This does look great, I think I will have to join in with at least one banned book

Nope, you're not the last person to read The Chocolate War. It's one of those books that's discussed endlessly in Children's/Adolscent Lit Master's degrees, yet somehow I still managed to *not* read it when I got my degree. Maybe I'll join in and try to knock that one off.

Looks like some good choices. And I haven't read The Chocolate War either, even though I read a lot of YA.

I was so close to having a BWB mini-challenge myself! I'm glad someone else is doing it, and also that I didn't do one without knowing someone else was already doing it!

I have the most ridiculously tiny wrists, but I also like children's books, so I might get that bracelet!

Verbivore, glad to see you joining!

Andi, I'm about two-thirds of the way through it, and it's way different that I was expecting. In a good way, though.

Nicola, thanks for stopping by! I'll have to check out your blog for YA recs, since it's a genre I just 'rediscovered'.

Dewey, I have ridiculously tiny wrists as well. And I love bracelets. Unfortunately, I can't wear a lot of them...they make my wrists look like they just survived the siege of Leningrad. :(
For some reason, the children's bracelet isn't for sale right now. Silly ALA!

One of my favorite banned books is still maya angelou's memoir "I know why the caged bird sings." Made me cry!

Jenclair, they certainly are!

Heather, I think I might substitute that one for The Color Purple then, because I'm really not feeling Walker. Thanks for the rec!

Ooooh, I positively love those banned book bracelets. I've seen them, and ones similar, before and have always been tempted to buy it.... :)

Court, they're so pretty!

Just wanted to let everyone know that I've decided to also make a post every day this week about banned books. I started yesterday and you can find a link to them all at the 2nd sticky post on my blog.
